New Partnership for Nova Scotia Guard
CANADA, September 18 - The 12,000 members of unions affiliated with Mainland Nova Scotia Building Trades will have the opportunity to join the Nova Scotia Guard through a new partnership with the Province.
The partnership with the trades council will strengthen Nova Scotia’s emergency response capacity by connecting more Nova Scotians with opportunities to help their communities before, during and after emergencies.
“This partnership brings 12,000 more potential volunteers into the Nova Scotia Guard, giving our province more capacity and more helping hands when communities need support,” said Premier Tim Houston. “This is the Bluenoser spirit in action.”
Mainland Nova Scotia Building Trades represents 13 affiliated trade unions on mainland Nova Scotia. Through this partnership, members would share their time and talents beyond the trade skills they bring to their job every day – they would not be expected to provide their trade services.
Growing the membership of the Nova Scotia Guard is an important step in preparing the Province to respond in an emergency. The Department of Emergency Management is also working to increase local response capacity through the Emergency Services Provider Fund and grants to regional emergency management organizations.
