Saskatchewan Proclaims 'Test Your Smoke Alarm Day' to Protect Families and Save Lives

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed Monday, September 28, 2026, as Test Your Smoke Alarm Day in the province. 

This annual awareness day encourages everyone to check that their smoke alarms are properly installed, maintained and working correctly. When a house fire strikes, a properly working smoke alarm can give those in the home the crucial early warning needed to escape safely. 

According to data from the National Fire Protection Association, the risk of dying in a house fire is cut in half in homes that have working smoke alarms. Regular smoke alarm tests can help ensure your system is ready to raise the alarm when it matters most.

"We know that smoke alarms save lives," Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency Michael Weger said. "I urge residents of Saskatchewan to test their smoke alarms tonight and to make it a monthly habit. When it comes to safety, it is better to hear a beep today than a siren tomorrow."

The Building Code Regulations require carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms (or combination carbon monoxide-smoke alarms) to be installed in all residential buildings in Saskatchewan, regardless of the date the building was constructed. In May 2026, Saskatchewan introduced Henry's law, further strengthening Carbon Monoxide Detection standards in the province. An amendment was made to require all suites in multi-unit residential buildings in Saskatchewan to be equipped with a carbon monoxide alarm regardless of their location in the building, effective November 1, 2026.
